Description
Fleet Services is the full-service, fleet management organization at Indiana University. We provide vehicle and equipment rentals, leases, maintenance, fueling, and manage micro-transit van services for IU Bloomington, and fleet program assistance for the IU regional campuses. Our team is dedicated to providing safe, reliable, cost-effective and sustainable transportation solutions for our customers to support the mission of Indiana University.Job Summary
This position provides specialized support to Fleet Services Garage staff to assist with logistics of the automotive repair process. Includes driving university vehicles to pick up parts and deliver vehicles as needed, general building maintenance tasks, and assisting mechanics with day-to-day activities in the garage area.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair on university vehicles and equipment under supervision.
- Documents repairs, time worked on job, parts used, and notes in RTA Fleet Management System.
- Provides assistance to more skilled workers performing installation, adjustment, maintenance, parts replacement, and repairs on university vehicles.
- Researches and orders automotive parts as needed.
- Transports parts from various vendors to Fleet Garage to expedite repair processes.
- Performs general building maintenance as assigned; repairs buildings by painting, installing weather stripping or other minor repairs.
- Assists with general custodial duties in garage area.
- Maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order.
- Cleans work area, tools, machines and equipment.
- Transports university vehicles to and from external repair shops, dealerships, and other vendor locations for services to be performed.
- Performs comprehensive 80-point safety checks on fleet vehicles.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks including replacing filters and fluids, lubricating chassis and other fitting, rotating/balancing tires, and replacing tires as needed.
- Performs basic automotive diagnosis and repairs on component areas such as brake systems, mufflers, exhaust systems, etc.
- Assists other mechanics with more complex repairs and physically demanding tasks.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Required
- 1 year of experience in the field of automotive service and repair
Required
- Possesses a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
- Class A/B CDL
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position oneself in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
